What do these lyrics mean?

I think it has something to do with looking back at a long life and realizing that life didn't happen TO her. She realized that the things that happened in her life, she was responsible for. Maybe she was facing regrets. Its like realizing that your fate is in your own hands, not just in the ping of time.
